A Family Tradition
August 25, 2018
The Vaca family have been enjoying Kay Lake and making memories here longer than Dave and I have owned the place. Tony came with his Father-in-law until he passed several years ago. Now, Tony brings his sons, his brother Rick, and his friends. We’re happy that the family tradition is passed from generation to generation.
Its not just about the fishing here at Nestor Falls Fly-In Outposts ‚Äì its the Wilderness Experience. After 33 plus years at Kay Lake, the Vaca family have come to enjoy the deck just as much as the fishing! And what better place to Celebrate Travis Vaca’s birthday than at Kay Lake this year. The beautiful clear blue water at Kay is amazing and you never know what you are going to see while staring out at the water.
Have you ever seen an eagle swim? Sometimes, when an eagle takes a large fish, it isn’t able to fly off. So instead, it keeps its talons buried in the fish and swims to the shore where it can eat in peace. The Vacas were lucky enough to see this strange sight!
One of the best parts of fishing Kay is portaging up to Derby Lake for some more excellent Bass and Lake Trout fishing. This year the path was being blocked by some beavers who decided to build a dam right in the narrows. Don’t worry – Tony and the boys tore it up. I think the beavers got the message!
The water temperature was only 40 degrees when they arrived, but is now 70 degrees a week later. Bass are turning on now that things are warming up. Bob got a nice Lake Trout – about 10-11 lbs. I guess the Trout hadn’t gotten the memo that he wasn’t supposed to be biting because he was caught in an unusual spot and on the wrong lure. Go figure…
