Fishing Lures: How to Choose the Right Lure

Out here in the wilderness, we get all kinds of visitors. Some of you have your tackle box down to a science, while others may be wondering what fishing lures will work best. For some inspiration, here’s a quick rundown of some of our favourite lures we never leave the outpost without!

Jig

A jig consists of a lead sinker with a hook moulded into it, usually covered by a soft rubber or silicone body that resembles a lizard, frog, or different insects to attract fish. This is a very popular lure among anglers, as it is used to catch a variety of fish––usually ones near the bottom––like bass and walleye.

Mister Twister

If you’ve nothing else in your tackle box, make sure you have some of these. These soft plastic curly tail baits are great for catching bass, walleye, crappie, pan fish, and more. When Dave and I go fishing, usually the only thing we bring is a Mister Twister, and a jig with a minnow. I remember a day when Dave and I got out of the office to do some day fishing on our secret Lake Trout Lake. I was using a twister tail with a spinner blade and couldn’t keep the trout off my line that day and Dave just couldn’t get a trout to bit to save his soul. What a great day!!!!

Reef Runner

For all of you walleye fishermen‚Äì‚Äìand women‚Äìthe reef runner is your “go-to” lure. Reef runners are designed to dive quickly and can be trolled down to 28-feet. Available in a variety of colours, this lure is the perfect tool to catch you a trophy walleye.

Rapala’s Shad Rap¬Æ

The shad rap is one of the simplest, most effective lures on the market. Though not flashy like many other crankbait, the Rapala Shad Rap can catch fish better than any other. Its oval design, true-to-life colour, and buoyancy allows it to mimic the most prolific baitfish found in streams, lakes, and rivers, making this lure a fish-catching machine!

Berkley Flicker Shad

This lure is a game changer for catching bass. Designed to imitate a fleeing baitfish, this crankbait effectively imitates a walleye’s favourite meal. It contains an internal rattle to attract hungry fish to your area. For maximum rattle and roll action, get yourself a jointed shad.

Fishing lures today come in a whole array of colours. You’ll want to coordinate with the weather: on sunny days and in clear water, use darker, more neutral-coloured lures to match the food supply in the environment; and on overcast days with murkier water, opt for more vivid-coloured lures to attract attention.
