Is This the Best Northern Photo of the Season?

If you’ve been coming up to Nestor Falls Fly-In for more than a year or two, you know that we have a fish photo contest every year at the end of the season. Well, that contest hasn’t even started yet and the Lachenmayer party already sent us a great Northern photo!

They came up to Nestor Falls for a fly-in fishing trip in June and released 1,400 or 1,500 nice fish. To catch the Northern to the right, they used a jig and minnow in about 6-12 ft. of water.

To take a great photo yourself, it doesn’t hurt to have a trophy fish like that Northern! But the photo also follows 3 important rules for taking a fish photo:

1. Hold large fish horizontally. This helps us get a good look at the fish, especially for a long Northern.

2. Support the fish’s belly. If there’s no sway in the spine, it makes for a better photo and helps preserve the health of the fish.

3. Keep the right amount of wilderness in the background. It’s great to see where you’re at, so be sure to show just enough of the rocky shoreline or dense forest behind you.
