Not in Kansas City Anymore: Bohanan Group Fishes Herod Lake

James Bohanan and his group from Kansas City escaped to Nestor Falls to fish Lake Herod’s icy cold waters for the Walleye opener. At approximately five miles long and with a set of inlet rapids as well as two sets of outlet rapids, drop-offs, bays, and weed beds, Herod Lake is known for spectacular Walleye and Northern fishing.

As the days passed and the water warmed up, so did the fishing. In fact, the party caught so many, they lost count of just how many they released!

White wabble jigs worked best for the Walleye; whereas spinner baits, and gulp and salted minnows worked well for the Northerns, which they caught in about six to ten feet of water.

The party reports their favorite part of the trip was being the only ones on the lake. They enjoyed the peace and quiet of hiking in the woods with no electronics, balancing that with the excitement of seeing a forest fire! This time of year, there were rabbits everywhere. They observed bear tracks in the sand, and even caught a clam with a hook!
