Why You Should Take Your Kids Fishing

April 3, 2020

Isn’t it great to spend time outside and enjoy nature? I love spending time outside but I enjoy spending time outside with my grandchildren. You see the world in a whole new way when you are with a younger person.

There are lots of benefits for adults to spend time outside, read the benefits here , but there are also benefits for getting your child outside as well.

Taking your child out fishing improves their sensory skills. Preschoolers, in particular, learn new things through their senses. Holding a rode- casting, jigging (hearing and touch), riding in the boat and touching the water with their hands/feet (sight and touch), stopping for shore lunch to eat fresh walleye and picking wild blueberries ( touch, smell, and taste). Kids who are inside watching TV or on devices use only two senses; hearing and sight which can negatively affect the development of perceptual abilities.

The natural light stimulates the pineal gland which is linked to making us feel happier. It is proven that spending time in nature increases our mood and decreases depression in adults. Children who spend time outdoors identify with nature are more likely to become adults who appreciate nature, let’s keep those fishing traditions alive!

Teaching your kids to fish helps build confidence and patience. In today’s world whenever you want something or need to know an answer we can quickly receive at our fingertips due to the high pace digital world we are in. Out in nature, it is always on her time. The fish will not always be biting so you must wait, keep trying, good things eventually happen if we do not give up. Your child finally catches and reels in their fish, the joy it brings to them, the confidence it builds that they were able to do all that on their own!

The most important thing about heading outdoors with your little one is that it brings the family together, actual conversations will take place with no distractions of TV, cell phones or an iPad and the memories made will last a lifetime.
